Byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) - Gold leaf, Lacquered wood - Japan - Late Edo period (First half 19th century)

Remarkable and large six-panel byôbu 屏風 (room divider) with a detailed painting on gold leaf of different scenes of the town Yoshida 吉田, one of the Tôkaidô road 東海道 stations. It shows various places and different aspects of daily life during the Edo period, while the famous Mount Fuji 富士山 (Fujisan) stands prominently on the horizon; In the centre a large procession is crossing ‘The Toyokawa Bridge’ 豊川橋 (Toyokawa’hashi), next to this scene you can see Koyama Castle 吉田城 (Yoshida’chô), and in the foreground a shopping street with a fishmonger displaying its freshly caught fish, crabs and octopuses. The different scenes are surrounded by dense gold leaf clouds. The panels are mounted by two silk borders, a thin brown brocade one, and a broad blue one with a flower design. Protected by a black lacquer wooden frame with its original hardware. Period: Japan - Late Edo period (First half 19th century). Dimensions: Total width: 368.0 cm (2 x 62.6 cm, 4 x 60.7 cm); Height: 173.2 cm. Considering its age (approx. 155-220 years old!) it is in a very good condition with some traces of age, wear and old restorations. Please take a close look at the photo of a restoration in the roof of the fish merchant. For a clear condition reference please look at the photos as well. The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
