Yukimi Ishi’dôrô’ 角雪見石灯籠 (snow-showing lantern) - Granite - Japan - Taishō period (1912-1926)
A lovely 4-part granite garden lantern, known as a "Yukimi Ishi’dôrô’ 雪見石灯籠 (snow-showing lantern) supported by two legs.
Its hibukuro (middle section) with a nice reticulated design of a crescent moon and sun. And one side with a rectangular opening, to be able to place a light source (ensô).
Its individual parts are represent the following:
The bottom-most piece, sao 竿 (post) touching the ground, represents chi, the earth 地. and sui 水 (water).
Ka 火 (fire), is represented by the section encasing the lantern's light or flame 火袋 (hibukuro).
Fû 風 (air) and kû 空 (void or spirit) are represented by the last section, top-most and pointing towards the sky.
Approx. dimensions:
Height 69 cm, Diameter 38 cm.
The age of these lanterns is difficult to determine. We think that this one is from the Taishô period (1912-1926).
It has an appealing soft outdoorsy patina by being placed outside for many years. It is in a very good original condition. There is a natural fissure in the hibukoro, which does not go all the way through (see photo for details). Please look at the photos as well for a clear condition reference.
We will use a wooden pallet and good packing for safe transport.
When shipped we will also add a certificate of authenticity.
