Rinko Kawauchi - Hanabi - 2001

Hanabi Rinko Kawauchi Little More/2001/Japanese/193 x 244 mm Rinko Kawauchi, one of Japan's leading female photographers, was born in 1972, graduated from Seian Women's Junior College in 1993, and became a freelance photographer in 1997. In 2002, she won the 27th Ihei Kimura Photography Award for her works "Utatane" and "Hanabi," and in 2005, she held a solo exhibition at the Fondation Cartier in Paris. Since then, Rinko Kawauchi has continued her energetic creative activities and is highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad. This book is the second in her "ikinari trilogy" along with "Utatane" and "Hanako," in which she depicts "Osaka, Chiba, Gunma, Kanagawa, Tokyo...... racetracks, hot spring resorts, riversides.... Kawauchi says, "I ran around wherever fireworks were launched" (from the publisher) and captured the scenery with fireworks wherever he went. It may seem an ordinary motif, but by capturing them from various locations (sometimes in a car, sometimes in a hotel room), the large rings that rise into the night sky seem more than beautiful; they seem somehow bizarre. The skillful way of capturing the subject matter, similar to that in "Utatane," stands out in this work.
