Smilodon (from ancient Greek smilē, "scalpel" or double-edged knife; and odoús, "tooth") is an extinct genus of saber-toothed felids from the subfamily Machairodontinae. It appeared in North America at the end of the Pliocene and spread to South America during the Great American Interchange. Three species of this genus are recognized: Smilodon gracilis, Smilodon fatalis, and Smilodon populator. It is estimated that the largest specimens of the species Smilodon populator could have exceeded 400 kg, thus surpassing the modern Siberian tiger for the title of the largest felid of all time (over 300 kg for the largest reported specimens). But compared to most felids, the most distinctive feature of the genus is its enormous canines, which have made it one of the most popular prehistoric mammals since its discovery.
