Megalodon - Fossil tooth

Megalodon - Fossil tooth

Magnificent, very well preserved fossilized shark tooth from Otodus megalodon (AGASSIZ 1843), the largest shark in the history of the earth. The serration of the cutting edges is very well preserved. Indonesian megalodon teeth are in a very good state of preservation and are among the most beautiful in the world. The teeth are recovered from very hard parent rock. The root of this shark tooth is undamaged and nothing has been tampered with on the entire fossil.
Otodus megalodon is an extinct shark species from the family of mackerel sharks. With an estimated length of 15 to 20 meters, it was the largest shark in the history of the earth. The largest fossilized megalodon teeth reach a length of up to 18 cm. For a long time it was assumed that the megalodon belongs to the same genus as the great white shark. However, recent findings show that the two species are not directly related.
The exact classification of Megalodon is unfortunately very controversial among paleontologists. There are several variants such as Megaselachus, Carcharocles megalodon or Otodus megalodon. In 2017, paleontologist Kenshu Shimada and his colleagues transferred Megalodon to the genus Otodus, which was subsequently supported by most other scientists.

Length of the tooth approx. 90 mm, (the maximum edge length is always measured)
root width approx. 68 mm

Location: Tasikmalaya, Java, Indonesia, Bodjang Formation
Age: Miocene, Burdigalian
Age: about 16 - 20 million years old
