Painting as Extreme Unction – Michel Suret-Canale (2025)
Acrylic on canvas — signed at the bottom center
Format: 80 x 80 cm (canvas mounted on a chassis, 3D black mounting chassis 2 cm wide, can be hung without framing)
This abstract work is part of a series initiated by Michel Suret-Canale in 1988, under the deliberately paradoxical title: Painting as an Extreme Unction. It is not a religious or funeral reference here, but a radical sensory experience, where painting comes to revive, awaken, and reinject life into the senses.
Without narration, without anecdote, the canvas presents itself as a space of chromatic jubilation, a vibrant field of free forms and pure colors. The painter abandons the figure to return to the essentials: matter, rhythm, inner light. In this act of surrender, there is also a form of purification — rinsing oneself of torrents of images, as he himself says, to rediscover painting in its truth.
Far from the mimesis denounced by Plato as an illusion, this painting offers a truth through the very intensity of the pictorial act. It speaks to the eye but also to the whole being — both contemplation and comfort, for fans of abstract painting or seekers of an art that soothes without cheating. Of course, it is also a nod, perhaps a bit nostalgic but sincere, to abstract painting of the 1950s and to the time when painters sought truth in painting (Bissière, Fautrier, Wols, to name a few), which is no longer the case in our disillusioned or even cynical postmodern era.
