Ancient Greek Gold Disc Appliqué with Repoussé Decoration (No Reserve Price)
A fine ancient Greek gold disc appliqué featuring repoussé decoration. The circular disc features two concentric ridges, at the edge and around a central granule. Between the ridges, a ring of spheres has been delicately hammered from behind via the repoussé technique. A loop for attachment features on the reverse. Some minor cracks, scratches and earthy encrustations consistent with age.
As in many ancient societies, jewellery was an important social marker used to demonstrate wealth and richness. In Ancient Greek culture jewellery was worn in everyday life but was also buried with the deceased as part of his or her funerary outfit. Jewellery might have been enriched by precious and semi-precious stones and decorative motives would have included popular myths, gods, goddesses, and heroes.
