Jade wordt net als zeepsteen en chalcedoon al duizenden jaren geslepen en bewerkt door de Chinezen. Jade werd oorspronkelijk gebruikt als gereedschap maar kwam tijdens de Han-dynastie in zwang als sieraad. In China wordt nefriet gevonden rond de stad Khotan in Xinjiang.
Jade wordt gezien als een waardevolle steen die boze krachten weert. Als men een stuk jade lang op zijn lichaam draagt, bijvoorbeeld aan een stuk rode draad om de nek, zal men zien dat de jade langzaam van kleur verandert.
Tijdens de Olympische Spelen van 2008 in Peking waren de medailles voorzien van jade.

Jade, like soapstone and chalcedony, has been cut and worked by the Chinese for thousands of years. Jade was originally used as a tool but came into use as jewelry during the Han Dynasty. In China, nephrite is found around the city of Khotan in Xinjiang.
Jade is considered a valuable stone that wards off evil forces. If one wears a piece of jade on one's body for a long time, for example on a piece of red thread around the neck, one will see that the jade slowly changes color.
During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the medals were decorated with jade.
