large ammonite - Fossilised shell - cleoniceras sp. - 140 mm - 160 mm
A very important group from a fossil perspective belonging to the Devonian-Cretaceous period. Completely extinct at the end of the Cretaceous, it is thought to derive from ancestors belonging to the Nautiloidea. Although it belongs to the group of cephalopod mollusks, ammonites are distinguished primarily by the shape of their shells characterized by bilateral symmetry. The shell is divided into an anterior unsegmented region where the animal resided and a posterior region divided into chambers. The line of closure between the chambers is very indicative and facilitates the recognition of the species. Additionally, its outline, initially quite simple and linear in the earliest forms, gradually changed to the more recent ammonites, which are often highly irregular and almost Baroque. Sizes vary: they start from a few centimeters but can reach up to 10 centimeters. As these are completely extinct marine species, only hypotheses about their way of life can be made. It is believed that forms with smooth external shells were swimmers, often predators. Species with more costate and ornate shells were predominantly benthic.
The ammonite protagonizing this lot, weighing 660g. has the characteristic of having very different colors on the two sides: warm, amber, and orange tones on one side and dark, gray, and black tones on the other. If a beam of light passes through it, the ammonite will display a very special play of lights to the eye. It is impossible not to be stunned in the face of such beauty.
