Crab - Fossil skeleton - Harpactocarcinus punctulatus - 12 cm - 9 cm
Beautiful crab from 35-56 million years old…. The crab comes from an old collection of a family from Paris
The crab is a member of the Xanthidae, or mud crabs. This species has been found in Europe, Africa, and North America (Texas). The modern crabs are often found on soft, muddy substrates where they feed on small worms. Note the large claws and structured carapace. Typically the legs would disintegrate shortly after death, but the main limbs with treasures are present, making for an impressive display specimen that is large for the type.
The crab was found in Italy in the rocks of the Mediterranean Sea
