Tijs Dragtsma (1992) - A 1000 Nails into the Light of David
Title:
A 1000 Nails into the Light of David – A sculptural tribute to Michelangelo (1 of 5)
Description:
A 1000 Nails into the Light of David is a contemporary homage to Michelangelo’s iconic sculpture — reimagined not in marble, but in pure brass.
This artwork consists of 1,000 hand-placed solid brass nails, driven meticulously into a matte black surface. From up close, the pattern is abstract — a shimmering, almost chaotic constellation of metal. But take a step back, and David’s face emerges with striking clarity: calm, defiant, illuminated.
Crafted from raw, untreated brass, the nails will gradually develop a natural patina over time — making the artwork evolve slowly, like memory, like legacy. Each nail is a fragment of light, a whisper of form, a moment of intention.
This is number 1 in a limited edition of 5. Each piece in the series is built from the same template, but differs subtly in spacing, rhythm, and light reflection. No two are the same.
