Globidens - Fossil tooth - 32 cm
Enormous jaw of Globidens from Morocco.
Globidens (genus Globidens) is a marine reptile belonging to the mosasaurs. It lived during the Late Cretaceous (Campanian - Maastrichtian, about 80 - 66 million years ago). Its fossil remains have been found in North America (USA), East Asia (Timor), the Middle East (Jordan, Syria), Africa (Egypt, Morocco, Angola), and Europe (Belgium).
This animal was about 8 meters long and had a general appearance quite similar to that of other mosasaurs: a relatively elongated body, flattened limbs transformed into paddle-like structures, a laterally flattened and very long tail, and a triangular head equipped with powerful jaws. The dentition of this mosasaur, however, was very different from that of typical forms: the teeth were globular in shape (hence the name Globidens), unlike those of other mosasaurs that were pointed and often ridged.
Notice the magnificent state of preservation of the bone and teeth of this jaw.
