Impressive natural accumulation of Scallops. - Fossilised shell - Gigantopecten restitutensis - 36 cm - 40 cm
Gigantopecten restitutensis, fossilized Jack Bean shell, from the Burdigalian, lower Miocene of France (Vaucluse), approximately 18 million years old, representing the preservation of a true seabed.
This spectacular fossiliferous block is composed of 7 scallop shells, in very good condition; 4 of them are preserved with their two valves connected, which is rare and makes it a true work of art of high aesthetic quality.
These shells have been extracted from a block of pure white limestone, which required a tremendous amount of effort to clear away; this is entirely natural, with no addition of shells or gluing.
The block measures 40 cm wide and 36 cm high, weighing 12 kg.
These shells come from a deposit that is now inaccessible.
