- Tamara de Lempicka, born in 1898 in Warsaw, Poland, was a prominent figure in the Art Deco movement and is known for her distinctive and glamorous style. After moving to Paris in the 1920s, she quickly gained recognition for her portraits of the European aristocracy, artists, and intellectuals. Her work is characterized by bold, angular forms, rich color palettes, and a focus on the modern, liberated woman. Lempicka’s art combines elements of Cubism and Neoclassicism, creating a unique aesthetic that exudes sophistication and sensuality.

Lempicka’s paintings have become highly sought after in the art market, with several of her works selling for millions of dollars at auction. Her painting Portrait de Marjorie Ferry sold for $21.2 million in 2020, reflecting her enduring appeal and the value of her contributions to modern art.

"Les Deux Amies" from 1930 is a striking example of Tamara de Lempicka’s exploration of sensuality and human relationships. The work depicts two nude women in an intimate embrace, their bodies rendered with Lempicka’s signature smooth, sculptural forms and soft, yet vibrant, color transitions. The composition is both tender and powerful, capturing a moment of connection and emotion between the two figures. The use of light and shadow enhances the contours of their bodies, emphasizing their physical presence and the emotional intensity of their interaction.

The piece reflects Lempicka’s fascination with the female form and her willingness to challenge the conventions of her time by portraying same-sex intimacy with elegance and strength. It is considered one of her more provocative and personal works, highlighting her bold approach to both subject matter and style.

In summary, Tamara de Lempicka’s "Les Deux Amies" showcases her mastery of form and her ability to infuse her subjects with a sense of modernity and emotional depth. Her works continue to captivate collectors and art enthusiasts, securing her place as a leading artist of the Art Deco era.
