C. Nozeman & C. Sepp - Nederlandsche Vogelen (1770-1829) - 2014

Unique XXL edition by Lannoo: ‘Nederlandsche vogelen 1770-1829’. This modern edition includes a sturdy cardboard carry case. A weight of 11 kilograms. In very good condition, the text block is as new, never used. Some light dents on the front cover, see photo. After the especially successful publication of the Atlas de Wit in 2012, publisher Lannoo again releases a facsimile publication of a book in the possession of the National Library. This concerns ‘Nederlandsche Vogelen’, the first reference work about the avifauna of The Netherlands and one of our most gorgeous and expensive works in the history of Dutch printing. This reference work by Cornelis Nozeman and Christiaan Sepp was originally published in five volumes between 1770 and 1829. Now re-published in a single binding and supplemented with an elaborate introduction and an index with the historical and modern names of birds. The birds are pictured in true size as much as possible and has resulted in a book of and extraordinary large format: 56 x 39.5 cm. Engravings needed to be made of each drawing and as there is no multicoloured print yet, all images needed to be hand coloured one by one by specialists. This makes the production even more expensive. The engravings were made by the Amsterdam amateur biologist Christiaan Sepp and later by his son and grandson. Cornelis Nozeman, a remonstrant minister took care of the text at each bird. He was one of the most knowledgeable ornithologists of his time. His work was continued after his passing by physician and biologist Martinus Houttuyn, and the last volume was advised by Coenraad Jacob Temminck, the first director of the present Naturalis in Leiden.
