Pycraft/Roland Green-Birds in Flight Beautiful book describing various aspect of the Flight of Birds such as The First Bird, The Sizes and Shapes of Wings and their relation to Flight, Modes of Flight, Courtship Flights, How to Tell Birds on the Wing, The Wings of Nestling Birds and Flightless Birds. Written by William Plane Pycraft and illustrated by Roland Green. The book contains various b/w illustrations as well as 12 colour illustrations, all tissue-garded and tipped-in. Publisher Gay&Hancock, 1922, first edition, 133 pages, 25x19x3 cm. Condition: Good. Publishers green cloth covered boards, faded boards and spine. There is some foxing throughout, not affecting the colour illustrations. The binding is still firm and there are no inscriptions (see photo’s) About the author: William Plane Pycraft (13 January 1868 – 1 May 1942) was an English osteologist and zoologist, born in Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. Pycraft wrote many articles and books on natural history, including The Story of Bird-Life (1900), The Story of Fish-Life (1901), The Story of Reptile Life (1905), The British Museum of Natural History (1910), A History of Birds (1910), The Infancy of Animals (1912), The Courtship of Animals (1913), Birds in Flight (1922), Camouflage in Nature (1925) and Birds of Great Britain and their Natural History (1934). About the illustrator: Roland J. Green (9 January 1890–18 December 1972) was an English bird artist, who produced numerous bird studies in watercolours and oils. He set many of his bird paintings in the Broads, capturing some of the wild beauty of this region in his distinctive style. Roland Green was born in Rainham, Kent, the son of a taxidermist, who trained him in the skinning, stuffing and setting up birds, thereby instilling an extensive knowledge of anatomy and plumage.
