William Woodville (1752-1805) - Original Engravings with Superb Antique Watercolouring on Medicinal Plants Calendula, Levisticum, - 1792-1792

“Medical Botany” is Woodville's famous compendium of 274 herbs believed to hold healing and other health promoting properties. Woodville provided genus and species names where ever applicable, and each herb is illustrated on a color plate. William Woodville, physician and botanist, was noted for his advocacy of vaccination and, of course, for this massive work. It is reported that he grew the plants used in compiling this work in the hospital courtyards at St. Pancras in London. The illustrations, with lovely hand-colored plates after James Sowerby - of which Woodville notes in his preface "are not less conspicuous in the correctness than in the beauty of his designs." - were nearly all drawn from living plants or herbarium specimens. "Medical Botany" has been described as "the best work in English on medical herbs of its time" and as having been written "in a thoroughly scientific spirit". The condition of these prints is very good, with characteristic strong plate marks and dates on antique paper that is a soft aged white. There is no foxing. All our prints are authentic hand colored antique prints, and the Woodville are more that 200 years old in remarkable condition. We describe all items as accurately as possible with any condition exceptions noted. Please use your judgement to confirm our accuracy and take into consideration that unless otherwise stated, these items are used.
