Tamara de Lempicka painted the glamour, sophistication, elegance and modernity of the interwar period... What we know as Art Deco. The artist would become one of the leading figures of this movement.
Tamara de Lempicka's portraits, nudes and other scenes are a window into the wealthy upper middle class and the decadent aristocracy of the interwar period. You can almost smell the Chanel perfume and feel the Great Gatsby, somewhere between the underground and total luxury.
Tamara de Lempicka was born Maria Górska in Poland and never wanted for money. Her biography, falsified by herself, is full of mysteries. We know that she hated communism because the revolution destroyed her comfortable aristocratic life of parties in pre-revolutionary Russia, when she studied art in Petrograd.
After emigrating to Paris, signs of financial weakness emerged and Tamara was forced to paint. In a few years, her highly personal technique and elegant style, as well as her contacts, made her the painter of the moment. The entire bourgeoisie and nobility wanted one of her portraits, and Tamara became an extraordinary portraitist. Soon she could once again afford her carefree lifestyle.
Thus was forged the legend of Tamara de Lempicka, incredibly beautiful and modern, a lover of hedonism, parties, orgies, cocaine and bisexuality. A decadent life that served as inspiration for most of her paintings, which largely portrayed the fauna of Parisian high society.
When World War II broke out, she moved to the United States, where she continued to be successful, perhaps more as a baroness than as a painter, as the flame of Art Deco was dying out.
Her work reveals a love for Ingres, but also for Botticelli and Mannerism in general. Nudes and portraits are her main genres. Elegantly dressed men or ethereal women with the fabric of their dresses floating.
Certain Cubist features were also seen in her work, and the artist certainly had contact with the movement, adopting a certain geometrisation in some of her works. In fact, eclecticism is perhaps the most characteristic feature of her production.
About Adán And Eve:
Tamara Lempicka not only paints in her characteristic stylised, eclectic and elegant manner, but also places the “first human couple” in the contemporary world (the 1930s), replacing the Garden of Eden with the big city. Undoubtedly, for an urbanite like her, living among those skyscrapers was paradise.
The relationship between the naked couple in this painting is clearly sensual. Adam seems to be about to bite Eve rather than the apple.
Lempicka's work is full of naked figures... Couples, orgies, love scenes, sensual poses... Nothing unusual for a hedonist like her, who saw and participated in more than one such situation.
The bodies she paints are polished and shiny like sculptures, but almost metallic sculptures, like the bodywork of a car.
And that's what Art Deco is all about... elegantly mixing Cubism, Futurism, Renaissance and other styles until you find the perfect touch of decadence, glamour and hedonism.
Note that rarely in the history of art has Eve been depicted with painted nails and lips...
Size: 49.5 x 69.5 cm.
