Offset Lithograph The Missing Man by Jack Vettriano
Copyright @ Jack Vettriano 1996
Published by Heartbreak Publishing LTD London.
Iconic poster The Missing Man by Jack Vettriano.
Jack Vettriano is a Scottish painter who may remind us, among other artists, of Hopper, especially for his silences and suggestive aesthetics, reminiscent of earlier and more elegant times. Vettriano achieves ambiguous narratives charged with sensuality and in some cases violence, and set in what seem to be universes inspired by film noir.
Self-taught, Jack Vettriano was a mining engineer until he began experimenting with watercolors. At the end of the 80's he decided to exhibit and study art at the Royal Academy, starting a brilliant career as an artist.
Explicitly figurative, his style has much of the aesthetics of classic Hollywood in a world where past and present seem to intertwine. Couples in erotic attitudes, dances on the beach, nightclubs... In his paintings something is told, and it is the viewer who is in charge of making sense of it.
Critics hate him. He makes, according to them, ill-conceived soft porn, or brainless erotic painting, but the public seems to adore his paintings, which have millions of cheap commercial reproductions from which he earns a handsome annual royalty. In fact Jack Vettriano's work is currently the most reproduced on postcards and posters.
Size: 50 x 40 cm.
