Item Description - This is a remarkable set of two Japanese creative Kokeshi dolls, each crafted and signed by a highly acclaimed master Kokeshi artist. These dolls are characterized by their simple, cylindrical wooden forms and unique painted decorations, representing a modern interpretation of the traditional folk craft. The smaller doll, titled "Seijun" (Purity/Innocence) by Miyagawa Kunio, features a natural wood finish adorned with skillfully carved and painted plum blossoms and possibly an accompanying inscription in black, evoking a style reminiscent of ink wash painting. The hair section is movable and features a small red bow ornament. The base is stamped with the artist's seal. It is a work that perfectly embodies the title "Seijun" with its simple yet elegant design. The larger doll, titled "Hana-gokoro" (Flower Spirit) by Miyajima Muhitsu, is a rare find from an artist typically known for his bold, large, and dark-colored pieces. This particular work is unusually delicate and features a cascade of finely painted white cherry blossoms, or possibly plum blossoms, down the entire body. The head section features long hair elements and an expressively painted face. The base of the doll is also stamped with the artist's seal. Both dolls are wonderful examples of post-war Japanese folk art and a testament to the individual styles of these celebrated contemporary Kokeshi masters. The larger doll's head appears to be slightly loose or designed to be separate, typical of some creative Kokeshi. Please examine the photos carefully to appreciate the condition and the artistry of these unique pieces. Artist The set includes works by two of the most celebrated creative Kokeshi artists. Miyagawa Kunio: Born in Gunma Prefecture in 1933, he began producing creative Kokeshi around 1948. He is a highly recognized master, having been awarded the prestigious Prime Minister's Award twice (in 1980 and 1990) at the All Gunma Modern Kokeshi Competition, in addition to numerous other awards. His work is known for its elegant design. His son, Miyagawa Yuichi, who now runs the Miyagawa Kokeshi Workshop, is also a Prime Minister's Award winner. Miyajima Muhitsu: His real name was Shigeaki Miyajima, born in 1929 in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture. He established himself as a wood craftsman in 1970 and started making traditional Yamagata-style Kokeshi around 1976. For his creative Kokeshi works, he used the artist name "Miyajima Muhitsu." He is known for his unique and distinctive designs, including his Prime Minister's Award winning piece "Midori" (Green) and his representative work "Bairin" (Plum Grove). This particular doll, "Hana-gokoro," is a rare example of his more delicate style.
