cockspur case - Kotak Taji (Bali) - Indonesia
Balinese Kotak Taji or 'Cockspur case'. Kotak Taji is Balinese for a small box in which spurs used during cockfighting bouts are ceremoniously stored and handed down to the next generation. The origin of these cases was probably to protect the owner from injury because the knives were razor sharp.
The elaborate cases were an integral component of the popular cockfighting games where sharp blades were bound to the rooster's spurs. The boxes had not only an aesthetic value, but even more a religious and ceremonial value. The making of these boxes was accompanied by rituals and magic, to give the boxes the power to ensure victory. In Bali, the fighting cocks were cared for daily with a lot of love and attention.
The Indonesian government has largely banned cockfighting because of animal welfare and debt problems. But, in some cases, in Bali it is tolerated, because it is an important aspect of Balinese culture and religion. The special attention that was given to this case indicates the importance of the cockspur fighting in Bali.
