1964s Tokyo Olympic
Medal design : Yusaku Kamekura (1915–1997)
Yusaku Kamekura was born in 1915 in Niigata, Japan. He graduated from the Tokyo College of Arts and Crafts (now the Faculty of Engineering at Chiba University) in 1938 and became one of the founding members of the Japan Advertising Artists Club, playing a central role in shaping postwar Japanese graphic design.
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, he created influential advertising work for major companies such as Suntory, Bridgestone, and Hitachi, establishing himself as a leading figure in commercial design.
Kamekura gained international recognition for his iconic posters for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, particularly the design featuring a bold red sun. He also contributed to the visual identity of Expo ’70 in Osaka.
In 1978, he helped establish the Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA) and served as its first president. He continued producing high-impact posters for cultural and public events well into his later years.
He passed away in 1997 at the age of 82, leaving a lasting legacy as one of Japan’s most influential graphic designers.
This medal was produced by the Japanese Mint, as stated on the medal.
