Domingo Salustiano Manso de Zúñiga y Areyzaga, VIII Count of Hervías and Viscount of Negueruela, ordered the construction of a winery in Torremontalbo in 1816, a town that had been in the hands of his family since the 13th century. Behind the ashlar walls of this winery, the personal history of our family beats. Under this building, a series of underground galleries (openworks) were excavated and covered with ashlar stone. These cavities were used for aging bottled wine thanks to the fact that they maintain a constant temperature, around 13 degrees, and a constant humidity, 85%, throughout the year. The width of its arches, which are unparalleled in La Rioja, is proof of nobility as it indicates that the winery was designed to produce and store a large quantity of wine coming not only from the vineyards of Torremontalbo, but also from the rest of the towns in the area of which the Count of Hervías was lord.
