Shintō-temppelin votiivitaulu (Hōnō) - Puu, Kupari - Japani - Shōwa period (1926-1989)
This is a metal votive plaque (hōnō-gaku) dedicated to a Shinto shrine in Japan.
The central inscription reads “Hōnō” (奉納), meaning “dedicated” or “offering.”
The right side bears the inscription “Funamachi” (船江町), indicating the dedicating community.
The left side reads “Shōwa 7” (1932), firmly dating the piece to the early Shōwa period,
when Tokyo was officially known as Tokyo City (pre-1943).
Notably, the copper plate features an exceptionally intricate and uncommon cut-out design.
Rather than simple stamping or engraving, the complex contours suggest a high level of
metalworking skill, making this piece particularly rare and distinctive among votive plaques
of the period.
Such votive plaques were traditionally donated by individuals or local communities
as expressions of gratitude, prayer, or commemoration, and were displayed within shrine precincts.
Material: Wood with metal fittings (copper)
Weight: 3.7kg
Shipping method: Carefully packed and shipped from Japan with tracking.
