Byôbu (kääntyvä näyttö) - kultalehti, lakattu puu, mulperipaperi - Japani - Meiji period (1868-1912)

An intriguing tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) presenting an elaborate Tosa School-style 土佐派 genre painting set against a shimmering gold-leaf ground with an attractive aged patina. The composition celebrates a bustling festival scene in Kyôto during Edo-period Japan, depicting the famous Yamaboko Junkô 山鉾巡行 (float procession) of the Gion Festival 祇園祭 (Gion Matsuri). Crowds of festively dressed townspeople fill the streets, their brightly coloured kimono enlivening the scene. In the centre, two floats with roofs surmounted by long yari 槍 (spears) dominate the procession. The entire composition is enveloped in dense gold-leaf clouds, delicately embellished with dotted raised lines along the edges, through which distant mountain ranges subtly emerge. Executed in natural pigments and ink on mulberry paper with gold leaf, the painting is bordered by two silk trims: a slender black inner border and a broad green brocade outer border. The panels are mounted within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with engraved metal hardware. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868–1912). Dimensions: Total width 373.4 cm (2 × 63.7 cm, 4 × 61.5 cm); Height 172.4 cm. Considering its age, the screen is in very good restored condition, with minor traces of wear consistent with age on both sides. The protective frame was expertly and expensively refurbished at a later (more recent) date in Japan. A highly skilled craftsmanship that requires a lot of expertise and knowledge. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art. When shipped, we will add a certificate of authenticity. Please note: Due to the holidays, shipping and handling times may be longer. Thank you for your understanding.
