Philosopher's Path (哲学の道) - Ido Masao 井堂雅夫 (1945-2016) - Japani (Ei pohjahintaa)

Item Description: This is a captivating woodblock print by renowned Japanese artist Masao Ido (井堂雅夫), titled "Philosopher's Path (哲学の道), Rakutō Jikkei – Kyoto Hyakkei (洛東十景・京都百景)". The artwork beautifully captures a tranquil scene along the famous Philosopher’s Path in Kyoto during cherry blossom season. Cherry trees in full bloom line a gentle stream, while traditional Japanese architecture and a small stone bridge enhance the serene atmosphere. Masao Ido is celebrated for his ability to express the quiet elegance of Japanese landscapes with rich colors and subtle textures. This print is part of his well-known "Kyoto Hundred Views" series, showcasing his mastery in contemporary woodblock printing. Artist's Comment: Philosopher's Path A small river runs along the path connecting Eikando Temple to Ginkaku-ji Temple. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom in full bloom along the riverbank, and the beauty of this tunnel of blossoms is truly breathtaking. This path, once strolled upon by philosopher Kitaro Nishida as he pondered, is named the “Philosopher's Path” and is also beloved as a walking path for citizens. I began sketching after crossing the second bridge following the stone bridge leading to Ginkaku-ji. Warm spring sunlight casts shadows upon the red brick wall. Cherry blossoms, bathed in sunlight, bloom magnificently, their reflections mirrored on the river's surface. Occasionally, a flurry of petals dancing in the spring breeze melts into the water. Size: Approximately 36 cm × 26 cm Artist Profile: Masao Ido (井堂雅夫, 1945–2016) was a prominent Japanese woodblock print artist known for his serene and evocative landscapes. Born in Manchuria and later based in Kyoto, Ido developed a distinctive style blending traditional woodblock techniques with modern sensibilities. His works often depict quiet corners of Kyoto, capturing seasonal beauty and cultural heritage. His contributions have earned him widespread acclaim both in Japan and internationally, influencing a new generation of printmakers.
