I have a particular weakness for Thiriet's 2019 Côte de Nuits-Villages Les Retraits, a beautiful wine that soars from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, spices, orange peel, burnt sage and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, lively and fine-boned, with melting tannins and a long, saline finish, it's already hard to resist. This was my first visit to Camille Thiriet's small négociant operation, which launched with the 2016 vintage, and I was delighted and indeed inspired by what I tasted. The barriers to entry into Burgundy are often lamented, and with justice, but a label such as this demonstrates that these barriers are not insurmountable. Fermentation with appreciable percentages of whole bunches, basket pressing and judiciously chosen barrels for élevage are the rudiments of the approach; and the result is wines of charm and real character.
