African Wedding Chain - Figuuri - Afrikka (Ei pohjahintaa)

Ritual African Wedding Chain – Carved Marriage Figures with Wooden Chain, West Africa Description: This rare African ritual sculpture represents a traditional wedding / marriage chain, symbolizing the sacred bond between two spouses. The object consists of two individually carved standing figures, connected by an elaborately hand-carved wooden chain, all executed from solid hardwood. Such marriage chains were used in ceremonial and symbolic contexts to represent unity, mutual responsibility, and the spiritual permanence of marriage within the community. The chain is not a sign of restraint, but a ritual metaphor for connection and shared destiny. The figures show strong stylistic abstraction with elongated forms, calm facial expressions, and closed or half-closed eyes, indicating a spiritual or ritual state. The craftsmanship of the fully carved wooden chain demonstrates a high level of technical skill and cultural significance. The surface shows a deep, natural patina, with wear, small cracks, and signs of age consistent with traditional use. No modern tools or tourist-art characteristics are visible. Origin: West Africa Period: 20th century Material: Carved hardwood Condition: Good vintage condition with age-related wear and patina; small cracks and surface abrasions consistent with age and ritual handling (see photos). Dimensions: Total length: 96 cm Weight: 750 g This is an authentic ethnographic object, not a decorative souvenir, suitable for collectors of African art, ethnographic sculpture, or ritual objects.
