Ralph Gibson alkoi ottaa kuvia Yhdysvaltain merivoimissa 1950-luvulla, ja myöhemmin hän auttoi Dorothea Langea ja Robert Frankia ennen oman studionsa perustamista New Yorkissa. Saaneena NEA:n ja Guggenheimin apurahat, Gibson nimitettiin 2002 ranskan hallituksen Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres -kunniaksi.
