Pair of Victorian Brass & Wrought Iron Fire Dogs England, circa 1860–1890
A refined pair of late Victorian fire dogs combining cast brass decorative fronts with hand-forged wrought iron supports, representative of practical yet elegant 19th-century British hearth furnishings.
Unlike fully cast heavy fire dogs, this pair features a lighter semi-cast construction – cast brass front elements mounted to forged iron billets. This hybrid build was a common and economical solution of the period, offering durability with reduced weight while retaining decorative presence.
The iron supports are hand-forged and secured using traditional blacksmith rivets rather than later machine screws. The visible riveted joints and subtle forging marks confirm authentic period craftsmanship and workshop manufacture.
The brass fronts display restrained scrollwork and softly modelled detailing, providing decorative character without excessive ornament. Their proportions and construction are typical of functional domestic fire furniture from the second half of the 19th century.
Very good antique condition. Structurally sound and stable. The brass elements retain a warm aged patina with minor surface wear and gentle rubbing to raised areas. The wrought iron billets show surface oxidation and age-related corrosion consistent with prolonged fireplace use. Riveted joints firm and intact. No cracks, losses or repairs observed. Suitable for period interiors, country houses, and collectors of authentic Victorian fireplace furnishings.
