Banjara 'Gala' - Lambani - Intia (Ei pohjahintaa)
A Banjara Gala 'water carrying' Headdress
India - Mid 20th century
This traditional head covering is used by the Banjara community in India (also called Lambani; tribes in regions such as Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh) It is often used for carrying water pots during ceremonial occasions, and consists of elaborate cotton embroidery, glass mirrors, and cowrie shells.
The circular ring on top (the indhoni or gaadi) is placed on the head to support heavy copper or earthen water pots. The rectangular, embroidered portion (the gala) hangs over the back of the neck to adorn and protect it. Today, these pieces are primarily worn during important events such as weddings and religious festivals.
