GREAT PHOTOBOOK by René Burri about New York.
For one night, René Burri follows the events, with eight rolls of 35mm film. Without a flash. Using only the scarcely available light. René Burri’s photo series is not a report in the traditional sense. More a meditation on light, or rather the lack of it.
FRESH CONDITION.
COMPLETE with the extra, loosely laid-in text booklet in French language.
Rene Burri's book "Die Deutschen" ("The Germans") from 1962 was selected as one of the best books ever published (Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook, vol 1, page 218).
A member of the famous artist-owned photo agency Magnum Photos, Swiss photographer René Burri (1933–2014) found himself wherever history was happening during the late twentieth century. His countless travels took him across Europe and the Americas to the Middle East to Japan and China to document the twentieth century’s major events. His extraordinary sense for people and their personalities resulted in remarkably candid portraits of celebrities, such as architects Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, and Luis Barragán; artists Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso, and Jean Tinguely; and Che Guevara, whose 1963 portrait with a cigar is one of the world’s most famous and widely reproduced photographic portraits.
Moser, Munich. 2009. First edition, first printing.
Hardcover with loosely laid-in booklet (as issued). 249 x 342 mm. 80 pages. Black and white photos. Photos: René Burri. Text in English (text booklet in French).
Condition:
Inside excellent, like new and unread. Loosely laid-in text booklet fresh and flawless. Outside quite fresh, but lightly rubbed like often (material thing), so light trace of use, but no remarkable defects. Overall very fine, better than usual condition.
Great photobook by René Burri about New York.
René Burri`s photographs have written history: his work is a mirror of politics and society, of turning points, triumphs and crises over the course of half a century. Whether it was the fifteen-year-old Burri`s portrait of Winston Churchill or his later portrayals of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Richard Nixon, Anwar as-Sadat or Muammar al-Gaddafi, all have traveled the world and lodged themselves in the collective consciousness. Removed from sensationalism yet no less striking are Burri`s images of the theater of war, of people suffering in poverty and calamity. And as if to hold such horrors in check, Burri has turned his lens with equal intensity to the spheres of beauty and creativity: to the landscapes of Latin America, to great artists such as Picasso and Maria Callas, and to luminaries of architecture such as Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer.
