Myyjän antama kuvaus

- Privately inherited collection from a Frenchman who traveled in Central Africa in the 1960s-70s.
Having participated in public health missions in remote villages, André has thus become sensitized to the arts of the origin, to their forms and their uses.
As was customary, the services rendered were thanked with gifts at departure, among which masks, statues and other objects charged with meaning.
The collection of several dozen pieces was also completed by on-site purchases in Bujumbura in particular and later in France.
-
The Idimu mask, specific to the Lega people of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, holds a central function within the Bwami secret society, which structures the entire social and political life of this ethnicity. Carved from wood often coated with pombe (red earth) and kaolin, it is presented during initiation ceremonies to the higher ranks as the tangible embodiment of the spiritual world and the Bwami moral doctrines.
Unlike masks from other African cultures worn during public dances, the Idimu acts more as an instructional object: it transmits values of respect, solidarity and righteous conduct, while visually marking the initiate's new status within the community hierarchy. Its anthropomorphic, streamlined and asymmetrical shape is not a defect but a language, each irregularity conveying a moral proverb. Thus, the Idimu mask is not a simple ritual artifact but a silent pedagogue, making visible the invisible and ensuring the longevity of a social order founded on progressive wisdom.
