Théâtre Complet – 2 Volumes (Works by Corneille)
France - 2nd half 19th century
A beautiful two-volume set of Théâtre Complet, containing the plays of Pierre Corneille, published by Garnier Frères in Paris.
Volume I opens with a biography of Corneille. The tables of contents of all plays are shown in the photos. The work is illustrated with hand-coloured full-length plates, based on drawings by M. Geffroy. It includes portraits, among them one of Corneille himself, followed by depictions of principal characters from his plays, such as Medea, Horatio, Don Sanche d’Aragon and Emperor Augustus.
Volume I: 592 pages
Volume II: 616 pages
Dimensions: 12.5 x 19 cm
Bound in brown half-morocco leather, with marbled boards. The spines are richly and elegantly gilt-decorated, and the top edges are gilt in fine gold.
The interiors are fresh and well-preserved. The text pages appear unread. The plates show some foxing. Overall in very good condition.
A very attractive and decorative set for collectors of classical French literature.
The books will be carefully packaged and shipped insured.
