Christien Meindertsma - Bottom Ash Obeservatory - 2015

Bottom Ash Observatory on entsyklopedinen teos, joka vie lukijan 160-sivuiselle matkalle seuraamalla 25 kg:n pohja-ashia sisältävää ämpäriä. Projekti ja siitä syntyvä teos paljastavat tämän aliarvostetun materiaalin hämmästyttävän rikkauden. Pohja-aski on poltettujen kotitalousjätteiden tuhkaa; jätteestä jätettä. Siivilöinnin, kuivaamisen, laseranalyysin ja satojen tuhansien kappaleiden käsin erottelun kautta Meindertsma tiivisti runsauden erilaisia materiaaleja. Kirja havainnollistaa potentiaalia, että arvoa sisältäviä materiaaleja jää monesti huomaamatta. The precious materials found in the bucket of bottom ash such as; zinc, aluminium and silver, were melted down and reformed, creating a visual kaavio demonstrating the richness of the material.

The book was produced in collaboration with photographer Mathijs Labadie who photographed the materials with extreme precision. In choosing to represent this project in book-form Meindertsma references the volumes produced in the 18th century which depict newly discovered minerals and botany with both scientific accuracy and a sense of wonder. The original book and collected materials are part of the collection of the Boijmans van Beuningen museum.
