“American Gods,” a collection of works by American photographer Annie Leibovitz (1949–). While attending art school in San Francisco, she submitted her work to *Rolling Stone* magazine, where editor-in-chief Jan Wenner recognized her talent and immediately brought her to New York. Her interview photos of John Lennon, taken there, were well-received, and she joined the magazine’s staff in 1970, rising to the position of chief photographer in 1973. In 1980, just hours after she photographed Lennon and Yoko Ono, Lennon was assassinated; the images she captured at that time were featured on the magazine’s cover and became part of its memorial issue dedicated to Lennon. While this book features famous actors and actresses, here is a comment from Kishin Shinoyama, who wrote the afterword: “This photo collection captures an era as seen through the lens of *Rolling Stone* magazine. That era—a decade when the world was in unprecedented flux—can be described as a documentary of people with a strong will who spoke out against the very times they lived in.”
