Chicago Homeopathic Medical College. Class of 1895. Original Graduating Class Photograph.

United States, Chicago, Illinois, 1895.

Original large-format albumen photograph (approximately 22 × 31.3 cm), mounted and presented in its original period wooden frame (overall 42 × 46 cm). Beneath the photograph is the original printed identification key listing all members of the graduating class by name, corresponding to the numbered portraits. Sixtytwo (62) graduates are depicted in front of the college building.

The photograph remains in good condition, retaining strong tonal contrast and sharp detail. The original mount and mat show moderate water staining, principally along the left margin, while the photograph itself is minimally affected. Original frame with age-related wear and patina. The frame and passe-partout has water stains (see photo's).

The Chicago Homeopathic Medical College was founded in 1876 and rapidly became one of the foremost homeopathic medical schools in the United States. From its purpose-built campus opposite Cook County Hospital, it offered a rigorous medical curriculum that emphasized laboratory instruction and clinical training at a time when American medical education was undergoing profound reform. In 1905 the institution merged with the Hahnemann Medical College of Chicago, marking the end of nearly three decades as one of the country's leading centres for homeopathic medical education.

This photograph documents the Class of 1895, graduating during one of the college's most significant periods of expansion. It is more than a class portrait: it is an important documentary record of late nineteenth-century American medical education and of the homeopathic movement, which, by the end of the nineteenth century, had established an extensive network of medical schools, hospitals and professional organizations throughout the United States. Chicago itself had become one of the principal centres of homeopathic medical education in America.

Original graduating class photographs with a complete printed identification key are considerably scarcer than individual cabinet portraits or later reproductions and are of particular interest to collectors of medical history, institutional photography, genealogy, and the history of higher education.

A handsome and historically significant survival from the golden age of American medical education.
