Thermoplastic case is probably made of shellac, wood resin, and lampblack compressed in a mould with heat and pressure.

The case would have held a daguerrotype, which is no longer in place.

The scene depicts the fictional character Sir Roger deCoverly with Gypsies.
The scene is based on artwork shown at the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in 1851 by Joseph Angell.

The hinges of the case are intact and it clips shut.
The innards have been removed.
Some edge chips to case, but overall it’s good for something 170 years old.
