A magnificent manuscript page from a Safavid Quran dated 1575, written in bold naskh script with a wonderful illuminated header, verse markers in burnished gold and red diacritical markings throughout. A beautifully illuminated cobalt and gold rosette adorn the margin, marking out the 5th verse of the chapter.
The text presents the first 7 verses of chapter 16, Surah An-Nahl (Bees), together with its illuminated headpiece which both names it and notes its 128 verses, the traditional count for this Surah. Verses 1-7 emphasise the imminence of God's judgment, the fundamental belief in One God, and the miraculous physical blessings He provides to humanity, such as creating human life from a humble drop and giving humanity livestock for transport, clothing, and food. the specific themes of these verses are: divine warning and creation; the paradox of human arrogance; and blessings and subservience of livestock.
