Although many societies in the Congo were once renowned for their vibrant masquerades and architectural sculptures, these phenomena have been studied as living traditions by only a handful of peoples, notably the Pende. Drawing on the extensive fieldwork of many researchers since the 1950s, this text provides a unique window into the dynamic contexts of masquerade performance and architecture in Central Africa. As much as possible, it prioritizes Pende voices as it seeks to understand the interrelationship between ritual practice and aesthetic form. Attentive to history, the text also documents how these artistic practices have reacted (sometimes unpredictably) to colonial and postcolonial pressures.
