*Platform* by Daido Moriyama, published in 2002 by Daiwa Radiator Factory and Taka Ishii Gallery.
The central series was photographed during a train journey from Yokohama to Shinjuku on a single day in 1977. While waiting for trains, Moriyama turned his camera towards the opposite platforms at Yokohama and Shinjuku stations, capturing passengers absorbed in their own gestures, expressions and private thoughts. The railway platform becomes a stage on which fragments of urban life appear and disappear.
Moriyama’s grainy, high-contrast black-and-white photographs transform these fleeting encounters into an intense study of anonymity, distance and observation in the modern city. The images are reproduced as powerful full-page and double-page spreads.
The second part of the book contains an extensive essay by photography critic Minoru Shimizu, accompanied by a wide selection of Moriyama’s photographs. The text examines the photographer’s influences and his position within post-war Japanese photography and contemporary art. Text in Japanese and English.
First edition, presented in black cloth-covered boards with silver lettering. A substantial and increasingly scarce publication by one of the most important figures in Japanese photography.
CONDITION
The spine is slightly sunned. Otherwise in very good condition.
