A contemporary figurative register very different from the artist's urban scenes: a young woman folded on a wooden chair, knees drawn to her, head dropped on her crossed forearms, eyes closed. The body tightens into an angular architecture — elbows, shins, shoulders — which the gaze travels as a construction as much as a figure.

All the painting is treated in simplified flat areas: the flesh tones built in clear planes of pale pink, ivory, warm shadow and greenish gray, without gradient, like facets assembled. The blue-tinged white drapery that falls from the chair is painted in broad light surfaces, while the dark blue and gold striped stockings introduce a bold graphical motif that structures the whole composition. A jet-black hair, lips and nails bright red, a few black strokes on the cheek: accents are rare but violent.

The background, a vast field of tender yellow-green laid down in irregular glazes, isolates the figure and gives it its silence. One recognizes the psychological tension and the elongated limbs of Egon Schiele, crossed with the flatness and the assumed color of contemporary figurative painting — this way of saying everything through cut and contour rather than modeling.
