Robert Chmelik - Palapeli - MacMahon-type cube puzzle - Puu

Vintage Austrian handcrafted wooden mathematical cube puzzle, dating approximately to the 1970s, complete with eight coloured wooden puzzle cubes, an open-sided wooden housing and removable fitted lid.

The puzzle belongs to the tradition of six-colour cube puzzles associated with the mathematical work of Percy Alexander MacMahon. Each of the eight small wooden cubes carries different coloured circular face inserts and can be rotated and rearranged within a larger 2 × 2 × 2 configuration.

This type of combinatorial puzzle is closely related to the well-known “Eight Blocks to Madness” puzzle developed by Eric Cross in the 1960s and commercially introduced around 1970. The precise configuration of this Austrian example has not been independently verified as the Eric Cross version and it is therefore conservatively described as a MacMahon-type cube puzzle.

The construction appears to be handcrafted or produced in a small workshop. The individual wooden cubes, separately applied textured colour inserts and fitted wooden outer housing show subtle variations characteristic of hand-finished production. The dark-finished housing has large circular openings through which the coloured faces remain visible when assembled, giving the object a particularly attractive sculptural quality.

A particularly interesting feature is the surviving original label on the wooden lid, reading:

“ROBERT CHMELIK
Stempfelgasse 2/6/5
1230 Wien”

Historical Austrian company records document a business under the name “Chmelik & Co. OHG Alleininhaber Robert Chmelik”. The surviving label therefore provides a direct association with Robert Chmelik in Vienna. His precise role in relation to this particular puzzle — whether maker, distributor or retailer — has not been established.

- Condition:
Good vintage condition. The set appears complete with all eight puzzle cubes, outer wooden housing and removable lid. Age-related scratches, rubbing, small marks and general surface wear are present, including wear to some of the coloured inserts. The original Robert Chmelik label shows age-related wear but remains legible. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description.
