CROSSING3|Sugai Kumi 菅井汲(すがいくみ)
In his early period after moving to France in 1952, Sugai gained recognition in the Paris art world for his Eastern texture resembling pictographs. However, from the 1960s onward, he completely shifted his style, eliminating unnecessary emotions and traces of handwork to transition into an inorganic and clear hard-edge (geometric abstraction) style composed solely of "circles" and "straight lines." From the 1970s onward, turning away from his previous hand-drawn texture, he pursued a unique graphic expression combining geometric, hard shapes (hard-edge) with vivid colors. This work from the "CROSSING" series is also a representative style of that period, characterized by dynamic visual effects through the contrast of precise straight lines, circles, and stripes.
