Caliph al-Mansur (754-775 J.C.), the second Abbasid caliph, was the true architect of Abbasid power, consolidating the dynasty's rule and founding Baghdad (Madinat al-Salam) in 762 J.C. as his new capital. A shrewd and frugal administrator, he crushed internal revolts, built a centralized bureaucracy, and left a full treasury that underpinned the empire's golden age.
