Myyjän antama kuvaus
Prampram Sculpture - Prampram Region, Ghana, incl stand.
The slender wooden figure derives its power from a radical reduction of the human form. A long, almost cylindrical body rises above two short, pointed legs, from whose shoulders the arms soar in steep arcs. The spherical head sits atop a narrow, coiled neck; the eyes and mouth appear merely as small indentations, while parallel carvings divide the two halves of the face. An intense red paint covers the entire body and is cracked in many places by age and use. Several small openings along the torso, as well as a fibrous belt at the hips, reinforce the object-like, possibly ritually activated character.
The figure is attributed to the rarely documented Prampram sculpture tradition of southern Ghana. Prampram lies east of Accra in the Dangme settlement area and thus within the larger Ga Dangme cultural region. Comparable Prampram figures are characterized by elongated bodies, spherical heads, and highly abstracted facial features. Field reports and accounts from the circle of the collector Baba Sylla connect individual works to shrine contexts; however, this tradition has so far only been insufficiently researched from an art historical perspective. The unusually raised arms and the red paint of the present example should therefore not be hastily equated with a specific ritual function.
Literature (selection):
B. K. Dogbe: “The Human Form as a Central Theme in Art.” Image, Kumasi 1977.
Herbert M. Cole / Doran H. Ross: The Arts of Ghana. Los Angeles 1977.
