This piece, officially titled "Dragon with Cumulus" (雲龍, Unryu), depicts a powerful dragon coiling through drifting clouds against a deep black urushi lacquer ground. The design is executed in the hira maki-e (平蒔絵) technique, in which gold and silver metal powders are sprinkled onto wet lacquer to build up the image before being sealed and polished flush with the surface — a method requiring exceptional skill and patience from Namiki's lacquer artisans. Each Namiki maki-e pen takes several months to complete from start to finish, reflecting the meticulous, multi-stage nature of traditional Japanese lacquer craftsmanship.
