Highly decorative vintage Kalaga from Myanmar (Burma) depicting a royal procession.
Central scene: A nobleman in a palanquin / pavilion, two warriors on a richly caparisoned war elephant, and two warriors on a horse-drawn chariot with large glass cabochon wheel. Surrounded by small floral sequin stars.

Dimensions: 120 x 75 cm (47.2 x 29.5 inches) - measured flat
Material: Black velvet ground, cotton backing, metallic gold thread, metal sequins, glass beads and large glass cabochons
Technique: Traditional Kalaga - applique, couching, and embroidery - hand-stitched
Origin: Burma / Myanmar, Mandalay region
Age: Mid 20th century, circa 1960-1980
Condition: Good vintage condition. Black velvet is intact, embroidery is firm. Sequins show age-related tarnish and light wear, minor thread loss at elephant feet / lower edge (see close-up photos) - consistent with age and use. No major tears or holes. Borders with gold metallic thread still bright.
Weight: Approx 2 kg
This type of Kalaga was traditionally made for temples and royal palaces.
