Klassinen Teke-Tsaayi -innoittain hakattu puupaneeli Kongon demokraattisen tasavallan alueelta, Tsaayi-ryhmän/Kidumu-perinteen mukaan, myöhäissyksikymmenellä 1900-luvulla, yksityiskokoelmasta, mustan rautatuen päällä.
Myyjän antama kuvaus
Vintagen Teke-Tsaayi -innoittama veistetty puinen geometrinen kilpi rautaisen jalustan päällä, Kongon tasavalta
Häikäisevä käsin veistetty puuveistoskilpi, joka on saanut vaikutteensa Teke-Tsaayi (Téké-Tsayi) -taiteen rohkeasta geometrisesta sanastosta Kongon tasavallan alueelta, Keski-Afrikasta. Syvästi työstetty pinta features a highly symmetrical arrangement of circular, stepped and linear motifs, finished in rich black and warm brown tones that emphasize the depth of the carving.
The design bears a particularly strong relationship to the graphic language of Kidumu masks, an art form associated with the Tsaayi group of the Teke peoples. Historic Kidumu masks feature symmetrical geometric designs whose imagery relates to Tsaayi history and cultural knowledge. This piece, however, is rectangular and mounted for display rather than having the traditional discoid mask construction, so it is best described as Teke-Tsaayi / Kidumu-inspired rather than as a ceremonial Kidumu mask.
The plaque has been carved in substantial wood and given a dark stained or pigmented finish, with the natural warm brown wood visible through the recessed carving and areas of wear. It is presented on a simple blackened iron or steel display stand with a square base, giving it a strong sculptural presence suitable for a console, bookshelf, sideboard or collected interior.
The plain, darkened reverse and naturally irregular hand-carved surface retain signs of age and use, including surface rubbing, minor marks and variations to the finish. These add to its character rather than detract from its decorative appeal.
Origin: Republic of the Congo / Central Africa — stylistic attribution
Ethnic/Cultural attribution: Teke peoples, Tsaayi group — inspired by the Kidumu tradition
Period: Late 20th Century, circa 1970s–1990s
Materials: Hand-carved wood, dark stain/pigment, blackened iron/steel display stand
Style: African Tribal Art / Ethnographic-Inspired / Folk Art / Sculptural Decor
Dimensions: Overall height 26 cm / 10.2 in; overall width 26 cm / 10.2 in; wooden plaque 19 cm H × 26 cm W / 7.5 × 10.2 in; base approximately 8 cm / 3.1 in.
