Hitomi Watanabe's Photographs of India: An Invisible Landscape. Shinjuku, the epicenter, stage, and battlefield of the 1960s counterculture movement. The legendary photo collection Shinjuku Contemporary (1968) captured the passionate spirits gathered there. Then, sparked by encountering a demonstration in Shinjuku, she became fascinated by the student struggles of the time. She was the only photographer permitted to shoot inside the barricades, documenting the events in ‘The University of Tokyo All-Campus Joint Struggle Council’ (1969). Hitomi Watanabe, a leading female photographer of postwar Japan, continued to depict the currents of the era with overflowing curiosity. This book is composed of images of India (Tenzoku) collected over approximately seven years, beginning in 1972. Tenzoku, where her utopian aspirations led her while still fixated on the conflict between self and other. A personal documentary set in a magical land where chaos and harmony intertwine.
